You have made the big decision and decided to improve your home by installing shutters on some of the windows. If you decide to go ahead and order in your own shutters it is very important that you take the measurements of the windows accurately.
Once you have ordered and paid for your new shutters it is a little late to check your measurements! Most on line companies provide guidelines on the correct way to measure for your shutters. If you are ordering from a local supplier it may be worth considering whether to in fact ask their installers to come and measure, to make sure there are no mistakes.
If you decide to go ahead and take your measurements there are a few tips that you need to be aware of before starting.
It is important to use a steel measuring tape to ensure that you get the most accurate measurements. Measure to the nearest 1/8th of an inch, if the size is on a 1/16th mark then round down to the next 1/8th mark.
2.Decide on the type of Mount
Plantation shutters can be mounted either inside a window frame or outside such frame to the wall or molding. It is highly recommended that if at all possible shutters should be mounted outside as they are much easier to measure and install.
There are two points that will help decide whether an inside mount is possible:
The Depth of the Window Frame
To be able to mount inside a window frame you will need to measure and look if a minimum of 2 1/2 inch of depth is available. You must measure from the front part of the window frame to the window or any obstacle like a window crank.
Is the window frame Square?
To do this you must measure the window diagonally. Once done if the two measurements differ by more than 1/2 an inch it is recommended that you use an outside mount shutter. These are mounted to the wall outside the window frame.
3.Measure the window / Mount
Measurement for Inside Window Mount
Measure the exact window opening size. Do not take anything off for deductions.
Width: – If you are purchasing Roller, Vertical or Sheer Shutters record the width at the top of the window only. With any other type of shutter record top middle and bottom measurements using the narrowest result.
Height: – You should measure the height in three different places. The left, the canter and the right. If you are measuring for sheer or vertical shutters use the shortest measurements. For all other types use the longest measurement.
Measurements for an Outside Window Mount
The factory will make your shutters for an outside mount to exactly the measurements you provide.
Specify the exact width and height you want your product. Your product will be made to the exact size you specify.
Keep in mind that you will need to add extra height for the mounting brackets which are usually 2 1/2 inches tall. (You can check this with your manufacturer)
If you are looking for extra privacy or to block out lighter then add extra width on the sides.
Remember to be aware of any moldings, door knobs etc that might be in the way of your shutter.
Keep in mind that divider rails may be needed to provide stability if you are installing large shutter panels (I.e. over 60 inches high). If this is the case it is recommended that you contact your supplier for advice on measuring the size required for these rails.
As it is so important that the measurements you submit with your order are accurate it is highly recommended that you have a second person confirm your final figures.
